The Four Gentlemen Chinese Brush Painting 4-Part Series

Instructor:

Jo - An Thomas

April 13, 20 & May 4, 18

This 4-part course offers an introduction to the techniques of Chinese Brush Painting, focusing on the Four Gentlemen: plum blossom, bamboo, orchid, and chrysanthemum. These iconic subjects have been central to Chinese art for over a thousand years, revered not only for their beauty but also for the moral virtues they symbolize, as understood by Chinese scholars and literati. Throughout the course, students will learn foundational brush techniques through demonstrations and step-by-step instructions. As they practice, students will explore the East Asian aesthetic tradition, emphasizing simplicity and the expressive essence of nature. By the end of the course, students will gain an appreciation for these symbolic plants while developing their skills in this timeless art form.

For the course series, if students have watercolors, they are acceptable for the Four Gentlemen workshops. Watercolor brushes, however, are NOT acceptable.
