History of the Beach Art Center

Established 1978
OUR STORY
The Beach Art Center was founded by George King. Mr. King’s vision was to improve, enhance and advance the public knowledge of fine visual art. As a resident of Indian Rocks Beach, he hoped for many years to start a school of fine art and an art gallery in the beach community. Mr. King developed a relationship with the City of Indian Rocks Beach and with the American Legion Post #128. His hard work resulted in the Legion donating the use of their building for a place to hold art classes. The Center was incorporated and opened in the refurbished building in May of 1978.

1978 Founding and Opening: George King, a resident of Indian Rocks Beach, realizes his vision of creating an art center by opening the Beach Art Center in May. The American Legion Post #128 donates the use of their building to hold art classes, marking the official launch of the Center. 1982 501(c)(3) Tax-Exempt Status and Expansion: The Beach Art Center is granted 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. Funds are raised to build a 1,400-square-foot addition, completed in 1983, providing more space for classes, workshops, and community events. 1989 Leadership Transition: After George King suffers a stroke, his wife JoAnne takes over the Center's operations. She continues to lead until her retirement in 1997. 1997 First Executive Director Hired: Following JoAnne King’s retirement, the Center hires its first executive director to oversee day-to-day operations and further its mission. 1990s Building Renovations and Property Purchase: The aging building requires significant repairs, leading the Center to purchase the property from the Legion. The Center takes out a mortgage to cover the purchase and renovation costs. A generous local donation allows the mortgage to be fully paid off in 2000. 2000 Mortgage Paid Off: Thanks to the support of a local donor, the mortgage is completely paid, securing the Center’s financial stability and ownership of the property. 2003 Grant from the State of Florida: The Beach Art Center receives a grant from the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs to fund additional construction and renovations, further enhancing the facility. 2000s Present - Program Expansion: To meet the needs of a growing community, the Center develops new programs, including the “Creative Kids Summer Camp” and after-school art classes. The Center also launches “Art on the Rocks” (Make It Take It) events, offering fun, single-night art classes for the community. Ongoing Community Support and Collaboration: The Beach Art Center sustains itself through membership dues, class fees, and local partnerships. It receives essential support from local groups like the Rotary Club, IRB Action 2000, the IRB Homeowners Association, and the City of Indian Rocks Beach, helping fund youth programs and community outreach.
